On November 3rd, Coloradans will vote on an important ballot proposition. At stake are the lives of nearly 300 pre-born babies who lose their lives every year to brutal late-term abortions.
Prop 115 would end abortion in our state after 22 weeks gestation. At this point in the pregnancy (five and a half months), many babies are able to survive outside the womb and the medical community is clear there is no reason for abortion after this point to save the life of the mother.
Colorado is one of only seven states that offers zero protections for the unborn. A woman can obtain an abortion at any point in her pregnancy for any reason. Prop 115 would end that after 22 weeks.
At 22 weeks, the baby has fully-formed fingers, toes, arms, legs, and can move his or her limbs. Babies at this age can often survive outside the womb with medical intervention and care. And at 22 weeks, the abortion procedure involves brutally ripping apart the baby limb by limb before removing from the mother’s body.
As faith leaders in our state, we urge our congregations to vote YES on Prop 115. We believe every person is created in the image of God for a unique purpose and abortion tragically and horrifically ends life prematurely. It’s our responsibility as believers to oppose such actions when it’s in our power to do so. Prop 115 offers us that opportunity.
We stand against such barbaric procedures because we know they’re wrong. At the same time, we stand with women facing difficult pregnancy decisions and will always do what we can to support them and connect them to the resources and support they need.
Abortion is never the answer to an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. We urge Coloradans to protect life this November by passing our state’s first abortion restriction.
